About Masterclasses

Join us for a masterclass to experience new perspectives on music-making

Come behind the scenes with us and discover how internationally acclaimed artists interpret and perform music by the world's greatest composers.

Something of an open lesson, our Masterclasses see the world’s greatest chamber musicians working one-on-one with talented young performers. The performers pull apart musical works, try out new techniques and performance ideas, examine a piece of music within its historical context, and uncover hidden meaning within the pages of a musical score.

Masterclasses are conducted by international and Australian artists touring as part of Musica Viva’s Concert Season. They provide an entertaining and enriching learning experience for audiences, students, and music teachers of all ages and levels of musical knowledge - alongside performances by brilliant early-career artists and young music students.

Our 2021 Masterclasses include both livestreamed and in-person events.

New to classical music? Start here.

Our Masterclasses are the perfect introduction to classical music. If you’re musically curious but don’t know where to start, come with us as we dive deep into the inner workings of chamber music.

For Music Students

Musica Viva Australia’s Masterclasses program gives music students the opportunity to play for and be mentored by some of the world’s finest chamber musicians in a variety of learning environments across the country.

We partner with a number of teaching institutions and music organisations around Australia to offer Masterclasses to select students. We also hold open auditions, so if you’re a music student or early-career musician interested in playing in a masterclass, keep an eye on our auditions page.

During the Masterclass, we invite students to perform a chosen work for the mentor, who will work with them on aspects of their performance including technique, interpretation, and historical context.

For Music Teachers

As Music teachers, Masterclasses provide new perspectives on playing, teaching, and interpretation. They also create fertile ground for the inspiration of your music students. We try to pair masterclasses with a corresponding Musica Viva Concert Season, so you and your students can get the most out of both of them.

At Masterclasses, you’ll witness a variety of teaching techniques employed by the mentors to enhance the students’ playing and musical understanding.

In NSW, attendance at a Musica Viva Masterclass is recognised as professional development for teachers. You’ll find all applicable Masterclasses are listed on the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards website.
