Carl Vine AO

Carl Vine AO is one of Australia’s best-known and most often performed composers, with a catalogue now including eight symphonies, twelve concertos, music for film, television, dance and theatre, electronic music and numerous chamber works. Although primarily a composer of modern ‘classical’ music, he has undertaken tasks as diverse as arranging the Australian National Anthem and writing music for the Closing Ceremony of the Olympic Games (Atlanta, 1996).

Born in Perth, he studied piano with Stephen Dornan and composition with John Exton at the University of Western Australia. Moving to Sydney in 1975, he worked as a freelance pianist and composer with a wide range of ensembles, theatre and dance companies over the following decades.

From 2000 until 2019 Carl was Artistic Director of Musica Viva Australia. His recent compositions include Piano Sonata No 4, The Enchanted Loom (Symphony No. 8) for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Implacable Gifts, a concerto for two pianos for the West Australian and Tasmanian symphony orchestras, and Five Hallucinations, a trombone concerto for the Chicago and Sydney symphony orchestras.

Carl’s new work for guitar and string quartet, commissioned for Musica Viva Australia by Kathryn Bennett, will be will be premiered by Karin Schaupp and Flinders Quartet on their national tour.

To our Ensemble Patrons Ian & Caroline Frazer - for their support of this tour.

And thanks to our Concert Champions:

Monday 7 March, Sydney – Kathryn and Judith Bennett
Thursday 10 March, Newcastle – Kathryn and Judith Bennett
Tuesday 1 March, Melbourne – The Musica Viva Victorian Committee
Saturday 5 March, Melbourne – Continuo Syndicate
Tuesday 22 February, Canberra – Juliet Tootell

Once in a while a collaboration reaches the heart of why we make music. This concert honours such a collaboration, built on friendship and love.

Composer Carl Vine was for two decades Musica Viva Australia’s Artistic Director. In 2019 Paul Kildea assumed the mantle, and for this concert asked his predecessor to create a new work for a much-admired soloist and string quartet, commissioned by a longstanding subscriber wishing to immortalise the joyous memory of her late daughter.

Classical guitarist Karin Schaupp will premiere this celebration of life and music. Joining the award-winning soloist on stage is the renowned Flinders Quartet, which embarks on its first national tour since welcoming Wilma Smith as second violin.

The concert includes Imogen Holst’s moving Phantasy Quartet, Southern Cross Dreaming by Australia’s Richard Charlton, and deliciously contrasting works for guitar and strings from three very different Italians, ending with two movements from Boccherini’s fiery Fandango, a work they recorded in 2010 for ABC Classics.

This special program captures the spirit of works rarely heard but exceedingly inspired – all carrying the passion, artistry and friendship that characterise Musica Viva Australia’s concerts.
